    Wrote the plays ‘Juarez and Maximillian’ (1925) and ‘Jacobowsky and the Colonel’ (1944)
    Published the poetry collections ‘Der Weltfreund’ (1911) and ‘Wir Sind’ (1913)

Why he might be annoying:

    When his father tried to get him to join the family glove-making business, he flushed several company files down the toilet.
    He knocked up his future wife, Alma Mahler, while she was still married to her second husband, architect Walter Gropius.
    He was a Jewish author whose best-known novel is about a Catholic saint.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was arrested during World War I for reading pacifist poems aloud in cafes.
    He wrote plays satirizing Adolf Hitler.
    While fleeing France after the Nazi invasion, he found refuge in Lourdes and vowed that if he made it to America, he would write his next novel about Lourdes’ patron saint, Bernadette.
    ’The Song of Bernadette’ topped the New York Times’ best-sellers list for 13 weeks and was made into a movie that won three Oscars (most notably for Jennifer Jones as best actress for her portrayal of Bernadette).
    He was posthumously named an honorary citizen of Armenia (2006) for having publicized the 1915 Armenian Genocide in his novel ‘The Forty Days of Musa Dagh.’
