    He supported suspending the right of habeus corpus in order to deal with British radicals after the French Revolution.
    As Foreign Secretary, he frequently clashed with Prime Minister Pitt the Younger over how to conduct the war against France.
    His predictions of a quick success by the Second Coalition over Napoleon failed to pan out (1801).
    His inability to either make peace with France or make progress on the issue of Catholic emancipation resulted in his government's dismissal after thirteen months.
