Magician

The Resume

    (August 16, 1926-March 19, 2006)
    Born in Sacramento, California
    Performed at the London Palladium
Appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and 'Hollywood Palace'
Acted in 'Musketeers of the Sea (1962)' and 'Judex (1963)'

Why he might be annoying:

Attempts by publicists to push him as 'the next Rudolph Valentino' were unsuccessful.
He popularized many now-annoying and overdone routines such as the 'is this your card' trick and the 'doves out of thin air' bit.
He liked to make random witticisms like: 'A critic is a legless man who teaches running' or 'No man in the world has more courage than the man who can stop after eating one peanut.'
One of his acts involved his wearing a giant bird headpiece over his face (it's his IMDB photo in case you're interested).

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the Air Force during World War II.
He did guest spots on Bonanza and Beverly Hillbillies.
He was strikingly handsome for a magician, and was often billed as 'the most beautiful man in the world.'
He performed for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Queen Elizabeth II and at the wedding of Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly.
He made it a point of never smiling or speaking in his act until after taking his first bow.
He retired from show business in 1971 to go into organic farming.
He was 'the James Bond of Magic' according to David Copperfield.
He was mentor to Lance Burton, who called him 'the most emulated magician of the 20th century.'
