    Full name is Susana Esther Baca de la Colina
    Became widely known for her rendition of ‘Maria Lando’, which was featured in ‘The Soul of Black Peru (1995)
    Graduated from National University of Education Enrique Guzmán y Valle (1968)
    Albums include ‘Poesía y Canto Negro’ (1987), ‘Del Fuego y Agua’ (1992), ‘Eco de Sombras’ (2000), ‘Lamento Negro’ (2001), ‘Espiritu Vivo’ (2002), ‘The Best of Susana Baca’ (2004), ‘Travesias’ (2006), ‘Seis Poemas’ (2009), ‘Cantos de Adoración’ (2010), and ‘Afrodiaspora’ (2011)
    Founded the Black Continuum Institute to foster Afro-Peruvian culture (1992)
    Won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album for ‘Lamento Negro’ (2002)
    Won another Latin Grammy Award for her collaboration with Calle 13 on the song ‘Latinoamérica’ (2011)
    Minister of Culture of Peru (July 28-December 11, 2011)
    President of the Commission of Culture for the Organization of American States (November 2011-2013)
    Sang ‘Gracias a la Vida’ with Chucho Avellanet (2013)

Why she might be annoying:

    She tends to dance barefoot during her performances.
    Her record deal with the singer Chabuca Granda, which would’ve made her popular earlier, fell apart when Granda died. (March 8, 1983)
    Despite her success overseas, she doesn’t enjoy the same amount of success in her native Peru.
    Her occupation as minister of culture forced her to cancel several international tours under pressure from political opponents.

Why she might not be annoying:

    Her songs have been met with critical acclaim for their poetic nature and evocative imagery.
    She first experienced discrimination against her African heritage in high school, when she and other non-white students were excluded from her school’s dance team.
    She is the first Afro-Peruvian to hold a cabinet position.
    She conveys the tragic history of Africans in Latin America through her songs.
    As minister of culture, she established the National Observatory for Discrimination and Cultural, Ethnic Exclusion in order to reduce discrimination against blacks and Native Americans.
