Wrote 'A Confederacy of Dunces' (published posthumously, 1980)

Why he might be annoying:

He was a spoiled child.
He allowed his mother to dominate his life.
He was an alcoholic.
When he couldn't get 'A Confederacy of Dunces' published, he gave up on living.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was tortured by his homosexuality.
He committed suicide at age 31.
After his death, his mother tried for eleven years to get 'A Confederacy of Dunces' published.
When it finally was, the book won the Pulitzer Prize and sold millions of copies.
It's also a hilarious read.
