    He was divorced.
    He was not very fond of special effects, which he thought diminished the cinematographer's art.
    He regretted that many people associated him with directing horror films.
    His final film as director, 'Dark Tower (1987),' was so disastrous, that he requested that his name be taken out of the film's credits.

    He earned a scholarship to film school by writing an essay about the future of films.
    When he enlisted in the British army in 1939, he was assigned to film news stories for newsreels.
    His film 'Son of Dracula (1974)' later became a cult hit because it featured Ringo Starr.

    He completed his autobiography in 2005 before suffering a stroke.
    His son Kevin became a film producer.
