Worked at Capitol records with such noted singers as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney
Composed the theme music for the TV series 'The Untouchables,' 'Route 66,' 'Emergency!' and 'Newhart'
Frequent contributor for the TV series 'Batman'
Died of complications from hepatitis which led to cardiac and kidney failure at age 64 in Los Angeles

Why he might be annoying:

His middle name was Smock (and his nickname was Nels).
Though he arranged the music for Nat King Cole's 1950 smash hit 'Mona Lisa,' the credit went to his then boss Les Baxter.
Though he and Frank Sinatra had a successful partnership during the 1950s and '60s, by the late '60s Sinatra was turning to other composers, eventually phasing him out.
Frank Gorshin's portrayal of The Riddler in the 'Batman' TV series had nothing to do with him.
After 25 years of marriage and seven children, he had an affair with Rosemary Clooney, which trashed his marriage in 1970.
Two and a half months after his divorce, he married his secretary.
He hated rock & roll.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He played trombone in Tommy Dorsey's orchestra before striking out on his own.
In 1956, he reached #1 on Billboard's Singles chart with 'Lisbon Antigua.'
He scored the movie soundtracks for such films as 'High Society (1956),' 'Pal Joey (1957),' and Rat Pack movies 'Ocean's 11 (1960)' and 'Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964).'
In 1975, he won an Ocsar for his score of the Robert Redford-Mia Farrow movie 'The Great Gatsby.'
He teamed with Linda Ronstadt in the mid-1980s to help her record a trio of jazz-pop standard albums, earning him two of his three Grammys (he died before completely finishing the third installment).
He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
