The Resume

    (September 7, 1926-October 24, 1997)
Best known as the voice of Scooby-Doo
Also the voice of Ruff, Boo Boo Bear, Ranger Smith, Pixie, Astro Jetson, Bamm-Bamm Rubble, Ricochet Rabbit, So-So, Dr. Benton Quest, Bandit, Atom Ant, Muttley, Scrappy-Doo, Papa Smurf, Azrael and Hamton J. Pig
Won an Annie Award in 1990 for 'Distinguished Contribution to the Art of Animation'
Died of a stroke at age 71

Why he might be annoying:

His name is derived of two negative words; 'mess' & 'sick.'
He started show biz as a ventriloquist with a dummy named Kentworth DeFrost.
He was the voice of Droopy only as a fill-in for Bill Thompson.
Dr. Benton Quest was originally voiced by another person when he was hastily asked to step in.
He portrayed many 'second banana' characters (Boo Boo, Astro, So-So) until Scooby-Doo.
    One hyphenated word: 'Scrappy-Doo.'
He retired abruptly in 1996 without telling any colleagues why.
Later it was discovered he had his first stroke and didn't want to let anyone know of the disability.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father moved the family around a lot, sometimes into homes without electricity or indoor plumbing.
He graduated high school at age 16.
His father died when he was 18 from a work related electrocution.
He served as an entertainer in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was told he had a thick 'east coast' accent, but was able to lose it during his voice career.
He was personally asked by Hanna and Barbera to join them when they broke away from MGM to form their own cartoon company (1957).
He had a lasting friendship with fellow voice actor Daws Butler (Yogi Bear, Reddy, Dixie, Elroy Jetson).
Scooby-Doo was his favorite character. He stated, 'Everyone seems to like him. He's got human foibles. He gets into problems, but he always lands on his feet. It always works out for him.'
