The Resume

    (March 28, 1891-September 1, 1955)
    Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Portrayed Jake Goldberg on The Goldbergs (1949-51)
Appeared in the films 'Room Service' (1938) and 'A Double Life' (1947)
    Appeared in 36 Broadway plays
    Member of the Theater Guild
Listed as a Communist in 'Red Channels' (June, 1950)

Why he might be annoying:

Although he swore under oath that he was not a Communist, he was forced out of 'The Goldbergs' anyway, with NBC and sponsor General Foods arguing that he was 'too controversial.'
He committed suicide by overdosing on barbiturates in a Manhattan hotel room.
Ironically, he died days before the FBI formally cleared him of being a Communist.
He tends to be remembered more as a blacklisting victim than for his acting.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the US Army during World War I.
He also directed seven Broadway plays.
The Communist accusations arose as a result of his union activities with Actors Equity.
He inspired the character Hecky Brown in 'The Front' (1976), who was portrayed by Loeb's real-life friend and fellow blacklistee Zero Mostel.
