Why he might be annoying:

His name in English is sometimes spelled as Gaafar Muhammad an-Nimeiry, Jaafar Nimeiry or Ga'far Muhammad an-Numayri.
He had a rebellious attitude even as a teen.
His rule is one of contradictions because he eliminated Communists as socialists and collaborated with Islamists to impose Sharia law as a western ally.
After he survived a communist coup attempt, he executed its perpetrators, most notably Joseph Garang, and Abdel Khaliq Mahjub (1971).
When parliamentary elections were an advantage for the opposition, he imprisoned many of its members (February 1978).
He eliminated dissenting elements in the military (1982).
He angered the predominantly Christian and animist south by imposing Sharia law in Sudan (1983).
He subsequently abolished southern Sudan’s regional government.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he led a strike to support Sudanese independence, Britain closed his secondary school for months.
He survived five coups (1970, 1971, 1975, 1976, 1977).
After the 1971 coup attempt, he changed from a Soviet ally into a pro-western one.
He and Sultan Qaboos of Oman were the only two Arab leaders who retained close ties with Anwar Sadat after the Camp David Accords when Egypt made peace with Israel.
He attended Sadat’s funeral.
After his overthrow, he was exiled to Egypt for fourteen years until Omar al-Bashir invited him back to Sudan.
