Why he might be annoying:

    He was dubbed 'the espresso priest' for performing readings of religious-themed poetry at San Francisco coffeehouses.
    He was initially reluctant to join the civil rights movement, saying he was 'scared about drawing undue attention to myself.'
    He said about his years in the closet, 'I had to learn to hide my feelings and show a face that bore little resemblance to my real self.'
    He wrote a column for the Huffington Post.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He joined the civil rights movement as a freedom rider.
    He took part in the Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches (1965).
    He was one of 17 protesters, including Father Daniel Berrigan, who were arrested for holding a 'mass for peace' inside the Pentagon (1970).
    The New York Times called him 'a latter-day [Martin] Luther or a more worldly [John] Wesley, trying to move religion out of 'ghettoized' churches into the streets where people are.'
    He married Mark Thompson, his partner of 30 years (2013).
    He said, 'My very integrity as a human being needs to include my freedom to explore who I am both spiritually and sexually. Not just to explore, but to practice.'
