    Full name is Sir Alfred Jules Ayer
    Wrote 'Language, Truth and Logic,' 'Hume,' 'Philosophy in the Twentieth Century' and 'Logical Positivism'

Why he might be annoying:

    He was the most famous proponent of logical positivism and held that all religious and metaphysical statements are meaningless.
    He had a near death experience.
    Robert Jackson, the Secretary of State for Higher Education under Margaret Thatcher, accused him of having 'enormously narrowed the range of philosophical inquiry.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was a student of Gilbert Ryle's.
    He graduated from Oxford.
    Although he had a near death experience, he did not believe it to be a true account of what he was going through, but rather the natural result of his brain dying.
    He accused continental philosophy of being 'unintelligible' and 'preposterous.'
    He was knighted in 1970.
    He was a vocal advocate of homosexual rights and the secularization of the government.
