Why he might be annoying:

His singing style is somewhere between whiny and castration.
He changed record labels seven times in the 1960s, had three labels drop him in the 1970s and Motown sign and quickly drop him in the 1980s.
He hated remaking 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' but his record company insisted, and it went to #3 in 1972.
He held the record for most time between first entering the Billboard Top 40 with a song (1958) to charting with a #1 Billboard song (20 years, 11 months).

Why he might not be annoying:

He has written songs recorded by Lou Rawls, Bobby Vinton and Blood, Sweat and Tears.
When his record company received the gold record he earned for 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight,' they gave it to him still wrapped in shipping paper and told him he was finished without ever recording an album for them.
In 1978 he was hauling bricks in New Jersey when a record producer remembered him, asked him to come to California and moved in with him until he could generate a song that would 'put him on the map.'
Though it took 20 weeks from when it first appeared on the chart, 'Sad Eyes' was a #1 Billboard Singles smash in October 1979 and sold over one million units.
