    Served in The Boer War and World War I
    Wrote ‘In Flanders Fields’

Why he might be annoying:

    He volunteered to serve in the South African War and resigned from the military after returning, only to join again in 1914.
    He contributed many things to the world of medicine and wrote many poems. But gained fame from just one poem.
    He never married.
    He took his horse with him to fight in World War I.
    He sent letters to his nieces and nephews and signed them with a hoof print from his horse.
    He became bitter and disillusioned during the war.

Why he might not be annoying:

    During medical school he tutored two women who became the first female doctors in Canada.
    He was highly respected as a teacher and Doctor.
    He was described as outgoing and fun to be around.
    He claimed that he was afraid to go to war
    but more afraid to stay home with his conscience.
    He wrote 'In Flanders Fields' after viewing the grave of his friend who had just been buried in a graveyard marked by small wooden crosses, with wild poppies blooming in between them.
    He wrote the most famous poem in Canadian history.
    He is a Canadian hero.
