The Resume

    (April 22, 1891-November 30, 1979)
    Born in Austin Bluffs, Colorado
Known for her photos of Southwestern landscapes and of Navajo and Pueblo Indians
Books include 'The Pikes Peak Region' (1926), 'The Mesa Verde National Park' (1927), 'The Pueblos: A Camera Chronicle' (1941), 'The Rio Grande: River of Destiny' (1949) and 'The Enduring Navaho' (1968)

Why she might be annoying:

Her parents originally wanted her to study music, changing their minds only when she proved to have no talent for it.
Her interest in the Navajo began when her car ran out of gas on their reservation during a camping trip (1930).
During WWII, she borrowed gas rationing coupons to continue her landscape photography.
It took so long for her to complete 'The Enduring Navaho' that the original publisher dropped the project.

Why she might not be annoying:

When she was 13, she visited family friend Laura Perry, who was blind, in St. Louis where the World's Fair was being held and was given the task of describing the exhibits in detail to Perry. She later said, 'The experience taught me the kind of observation I would have never learned otherwise.'
Ansel Adams called her 'one of the most important photographers of our time.'
'The Enduring Navaho' was praised by both photographers and anthropologists.
A few weeks before her death, she took her last pictures, leaning out the window of a low-flying plane to photograph the Rio Grande valley.
