When his acting career didn't take off he became a realtor.
During one of his school lectures on AIDS prevention, a student asked how he contracted the disease. He explained, 'I probably got it behind a bush somewhere.'

He served in the Army during the early 1950s.
He opened several successful businesses, including a candy store and gay bar.
In 1985 after his HIV diagnosis, he devoted the rest of his life as a safe sex and AIDS awareness advocate.
He won numerous awards for his activism.
