The Resume

    (July 5, 1902-February 27, 1985)
    Born in Nahant, Massachusetts
    US Senator from Massachusetts (1937-44,1947-53)
US Ambassador to the United Nations (1953-60), South Vietnam (1963-64,1965-67) and West Germany (1968-69)
Special envoy to the Vatican (1970-77)
Running mate of Richard M. Nixon (1960)
Wrote 'As It Was: An Inside View of Politics and Power in the 50s and 60s' (1976)

Why he might be annoying:

Henry Lodge Cabot was his grandfather rather than his father, so technically he should be 'Henry Cabot Lodge II,' not 'Jr.'
A biographer wrote that his 'patrician arrogance often rubbed people the wrong way.'
As Dwight David Eisenhower's campaign manager, he concentrated so much on the presidential campaign that John F. Kennedy was able to defeat him for his Senate seat.
Republican insiders complained that he did not campaign aggresively as a Vice-Presidential candidate.
He was an advocate of escalating US military involvement in Vietnam.
He said, 'It is clear to all that the Viet Cong cannot possibly win and we cannot possibly be defeated.' (1966)

Why he might not be annoying:

He resigned from the Senate to serve in World War II.
He received the French Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre after single-handedly capturing a four-man German patrol.
He described himself politicaly as a 'practical progressive.'
Despite not being a declared candidate, he won a write-in victory in the New Hampshire Republican primary (1964).
He recognized victory in Vietnam could not be achieved solely through military means, saying 'If you win the people over, the war is over.'
Time magazine wrote, 'Unlike many others now in political life, Lodge still believes in one old-fashioned virtue: putting his country far above himself.'
