He married Esther Williams in 1969, and according to her 1999 autobiography, Fernando was described as being extremely controlling and would not allow her 3 children from her previous marriage live with them.
He had a reputation for being a womanizer.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a handsome Latin lover.
He made over 100 appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in the 60s and 70s, which Billy Crystal's Fernando ('You look mahvelous') was inspired.
Lamas' arched eyebrows and tightlipped mouth suggested a hint of cruelty that producers didn't properly exploit; he should have played more heavies.
