Why he might be annoying:

    He owned slaves (31 as of the 1860 census).
    He drafted Mississippi's Ordinance of Secession.
    His military career ended when he fainted from vertigo while reviewing his regiment (May 15, 1862).
    He declared 'the superiority of the unconquered and unconquerable Saxon race.'
    He was rumored to have provided a government job to a woman in exchange for sex.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He gave a eulogy on the House floor for Charles Sumner, despite Sumner's unpopularity in the South.
    His efforts to reconcile the North and South after the Civil War earned him the moniker 'the Great Pacificator.'
    He opposed the adoption of a new constitution for Mississippi expressly designed to disenfranchise blacks who had been voting during Reconstruction (1890).
    Readers of the Lowering the Bar website overwhelmingly selected him as the best-named Justice in the history of the Supreme Court, receiving four times as many votes as runner-up Bushrod Washington.
