The Resume

    (November 15, 1999- )
Founded by Donna Williams and Adam Powell
Neopets, Inc. created by Doug Dohring
    Virtual world
Official currency: Neopoints (except Krawk Island)

Why Neopets might be annoying:

The pets tend to say the exact same things over and over and over and over again (‘know anyone who’s up for a fight?’).
Its business model is based on Scientology.
Although the months and years work like our own, the descriptions do not; for example, February 2007 is the Month of Awakening, Year 9.
One area of Neopia – Krawk Island – uses its own currency and does not accept Neopoints.
Another area of Neopia – Lutari Island – can only be accessed through mobile phones in the United States.
Its globe contains only one continent.
Powell’s obsession with asparagus is a running site gag.

Why Neopets might not be annoying:

It is a safe and sanitary alternative to actual pet maintenance.
It averaged 100,000 page views a week in its first six weeks — enough to overwhelm Powell and Williams to near bankruptcy.
A user can own up to four pets, who themselves can own pets called Petpets (who can, in turn, own insects known as Petpetpets).
The primary Neopets have a human quality to them — eating, reading, walking on their hind legs, even wearing different colors.
Neopoints can be amassed through such events as games, the stock market (Neodaq), signing up for sponsors, or visiting the Advent Calendar every December.
Almost all virtual shopkeepers are willing to haggle.
They give out their own cheat codes at the Wheel of Knowledge (Brightvale).
The site retained its use of the British writing system (for its founders) even though the company was based in Glendale, California.
