    'Down Beat' magazine dismissed his most successful album, 'At the Pershing,' as 'cocktail music.'
    After closing his nightclub Alhambra and divorcing his first wife, Maryam, he stopped performing for three years (1961-64).
    He was hospitalized after overdosing on sleeping pills (1963).
    He tried to sue critic Leonard Feather for mentioning his birth name in an article (1996).

    Art Tatum hailed him as 'a coming great' when he was fourteen.
    Miles Davis said, 'All my inspiration comes from Ahmad Jamal.'
    Stanley Crouch wrote that he was second in importance only to Charlie Parker in the development of jazz after WWII.
    He was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts (1994).
