Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of school to be a farm laborer.
Despite being a great athlete, he hated conditioning and was rarely in shape.
    He was an alcoholic.
When he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, an arm injury ended his major league career the same season the 'Gas House Gang' won the World Series.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was discovered by an Omaha minor league scout while he was pitching for the Genoa, Nebraska town team.
In 1931, and finally in condition, he had a 24-2 record in the minors, and was called up by the Chicago Cubs.
In the 1932 World Series against the Yankees, he threw three shutout innings in two relief appearances, and struck out Babe Ruth.
His best season was 1933, when he went 13-6 as a long reliever and spot starter, and led the National League in winning percentage.
After his career ended, he managed in the minor leagues and owned an Indiana motel.
He is still recognized as one of the best players to come from the old 'town team' system.
