The Resume

    (January 27, 1905-January 3, 1969)
    Born in Los Angeles, California
Portrayed barber Floyd Lawson on The Andy Griffith Show
Regular on the radio dramas 'Speed Gibson of the International Secret Police' (1937-40) and 'Gunsmoke' (1952-61)
Appeared in the films 'The Long, Long Trailer' (1953), 'Bell, Book and Candle' (1958), 'Blue Hawaii' (1961), 'Kiss Me, Stupid' (1964) and 'The Fortune Cookie' (1966)

Why he might be annoying:

Although he played a wide variety of roles on radio, on film he was typecast as a fidgety fussbudget.
Andy Griffith said, 'Howard was a nervous man, and he became that man, Floyd.'
Oddly, the rights to his image are controlled not by his family, but by Mt. Airey, NC, barber Russell Hiatt (the inspiration for Floyd Lawson).

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on the left side.
After a year and a half recovery, he returned to the Andy Griffith Show, with the writers and production crew accommodating his disability.
In his scenes, he was either sitting, or stood behind the barber chair, supported by a stand built by the stagehands.
Fellow Andy Griffith Show actor Jack Dodson said, 'He was just a wonderful human being and a splendid actor.'
