    Best known for number one Billboard hit ‘Michael’ (1960) and top 20 hit ‘Cottonfields’ (1960)
    Also known for ‘Big Rock Candy Mountain’ (1960), ‘All My Trials’ (1960), ‘The Gypsy Rover’(1961), ‘I Know Where I’m Going’ (1962) and ‘Universal Soldier’ (1963)
    Appeared on The Tonight Show and The Ed Sullivan Show in the 1960s

Why they might be annoying:

    Their name refers to robbers who target travelers.
    Their original name was even worse: The Clansmen. (They were unaware of its racist connotations.)
    They were well-heeled college boys who sang about picking cotton.
    Despite their success, most of the original members soon left the group to pursue careers in business, law, politics and academics.
    Later member Alan Scharf appeared in ‘The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes’ (1978).

Why they might not be annoying:

    The original members all made the dean’s list.
    Their biggest hits ‘Michael’ and ‘Cotton Fields’ were B-side recordings.
    Gil Robbins, who joined the group in 1962, is Tim Robbins’ father.
    Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson stole the name ‘The Highwaymen’ to use for their country supergroup.
    The orginal Highwaymen dropped their lawsuit against Willie Nelson et al when they were invited to perform at a joint concert in Hollywood (1990).
