Why he might be annoying:

Even though he won gold medals from the University of London for anatomy and physiology, he did not receive a degree because he failed to show up for the final exams.
His own scientific work was overshadowed by his advocacy for Darwin.
Darwin said, 'I think his tone is much too vehement.'
He suffered several bouts of depression.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had to drop out of school at age 10 for financial reasons, but taught himself science, Latin and Greek.
He was one of the first scientists to suggest that birds evolved from dinosaurs.
When it was suggested that evolution had removed mankind from its exalted position, he commented, 'It is as respected to be a modified ape as to be modified dirt.'
Even though his family sent out no invitations for his funeral, over 200 people, including most of the leading scientists of the day, showed up.
