Why Lewiston, Maine might be annoying:

    It has extremely harsh winters.
    It has been nicknamed 'The Dirty Lew' because of its reputation of being a hotbed of high crime.
    Textile tycoon Benjamin Bates IV's possession of more money than the city started the Lewiston cotton riots (1861).
    Like its twin city Auburn, the workers of the shoe industry went on strike (March-June 1937).
    Its buildings in the downtown area were vacant and worn out after its textile mills were shutdown in the late 1950s.
    A white supremacist group protested against the presence of Somali immigrants in the city (January 2003).
    From the last two decades of the 20th century into the first decade of the 21st century, its population went from over 40,000 to 35,000.
    It had a QMJHL franchise, the Lewiston Maineiacs, who were contracted after eight seasons due to financial losses.

Why Lewiston, Maine might not be annoying:

    It has a large French speaking population and a large Somali population.
    It was a hub for textile manufacturing with the Bates Mill.
    Prior to the establishment of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Maine State Seminary (now Bates College) was among the first universities to allow black students in campus.
    Muhammad Ali defeated Sonny Liston for the second time for the World Heavyweight Championship at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée (May 25, 1965).
    The Maineiacs were the QMJHL's second venture into the United States and the only one to play a full season.
    The Maineiacs posted a 16-1 record in the QMJHL playoffs, becoming the only American based team in league history to win the President's Cup (2007).
    It hosts events such as the Emerge Film Festival, The Great Falls Balloon Festival, Festival Franco, Liberty Festival and the Patrick Dempsey Challenge.
    It has a dozen historic sites and a few museums.
    It is where the annual editions of the Farmers' Almanac are published.
    It was where the photographic dry plate was first created.
    Its Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is the state's only basilica.
    It was on Forbes Magazine's list of '25 Best Places to Retire' (2017).
    Actor Patrick Dempsey was born here.
