Non-fiction works include 'Three Masters: Balzac, Dickens, Dostoyefsky' (1920), 'Nietzsche' (1925), 'Decisive Moments in History' (1927), 'Marie Antoinette: The Portrait of an Average Woman' (1932), 'Erasmus of Rotterdam' (1934), 'Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles' (1935), 'Conqueror of the Seas: The Story of Magellan' (1938), 'Brazil, Land of the Future' (1941) and 'The World of Yesterday' (1942)

Why he might be annoying:

During a period of anti-German sentiment, his books were published in English under the pseudonym 'Stephen Branch.'
He believed Hitler's persecution of the Jews was directed at him personally.
He agreed to write 'Brazil: Land of the Future' in exchange for receiving an expedited residency permit.
He twice tried to get his first wife to join him in a suicide pact before succeeding with his second wife.

Why he might not be annoying:

Critic Clive James called him 'the incarnation of humanism.'
'Letter from an Unknown Woman' and his bio of Marie Antoinette were adapted into popular Hollywood movies.
In his 1920s heyday, he was the world's most-translated contemporary author.
He wrote the libretto for the opera 'The Silent Woman' for Richard Strauss, who defied the Nazi authorities by refusing to remove Zweig's name from the opera program.
