Why he might be annoying:

He came from a slave-owning family and briefly owned slaves himself.
He changed political parties frequently, going from the Whigs to the Know-Nothings to the Constitutional Unionists to the Democrats and finally to the Republicans.
He had chronic money problems that led him to consider resigning from the Supreme Court and returning to private practice.
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., called him 'the last tobacco chomping justice.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He fought for the Union during the Civil War.
He was married to Malvina French Shanklin for 55 years until his death.
He was the only dissenting vote in Plessy v. Ferguson, the case in which the Court upheld 'separate but equal' segregation laws, warning that their ruling would become as infamous as the Dred Scott decision.
He wrote, 'Our constitution is color-blind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens. In respect of civil rights, all citizens are equal before the law.'
