Why he might be annoying:

He was a vegetarian.
He was arrested for his satires that ridiculed the French government (1718).
He insulted a young French Nobleman and was exiled to England (1726).
On his return to Paris, he wrote a book praising English customs, the French thought it was a criticism of their culture and he was forced to flee Paris (1729).

Why he might not be annoying:

His philosophy rejected metaphysical optimism for human resilience.
He rejected Astrology.
He said: 'In a word, less superstition, less fanaticism; and less fanaticism, less misery.'
He said: 'The more I read, the more I meditate; and the more I acquire, the more certain I am that I know nothing.'
He strongly criticized religious intolerance and persecution.
Because he criticized the church, he was denied burial on church grounds.
Finally an abbey in Champagne allowed his burial, and his remained were later moved to Pantheon (1791).
Ultra religious zealots dug up his grave and and threw his body into a garbage dump (1814).
