It is home to a lot of hippies, hipsters, druggies, artsy-fartsy types, New Agers, rednecks, punks, etc.
It is a haven for people who prefer to live an 'alternative' lifestyle.
Rolling Stone magazine dubbed it 'America’s New Freak Capital.'
It is basically a poor man's San Francisco.
It has been the filming location for terrible movies like 'Richie Rich,' 'Hannibal' and 'Patch Adams.'

Why Asheville, North Carolina might not be annoying:

It is a small city that is more diverse and cosmopolitan than many major cities.
It is the hometown of author Thomas Wolfe.
It has a renowned art scene and is home to numerous art galleries.
The Biltmore Estate is the largest private residence in the US and is a big tourist attraction.
Its downtown is full of beautiful, well-preserved Art Deco buildings that have been turned into stores, performance venues and great restaurants.
No matter what walk of life you come from, you won't be looked down upon here.
