    He refused to talk about his first marriage (to Margaret Kempson during World War II), with his children only learning about it from media reports in 1976.
    When his future second wife first met him, she described him as 'not a very attractive creature.'
    He suffered a nervous breakdown from the combined stresses of running a business, raising a family, and his wife's burgeoning political career (1964).
    He admitted he was not sure where the Falkland Islands were until Britain and Argentina went to war over them.
    He called blacks in England 'fuzzy wuzzies' and complained that India was 'high on the buggeration factor.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his services during World War II.
    Margaret wrote, 'I could never have been Prime Minister for more than eleven years without Denis by my side.'
    The New York Times wrote that he 'embraced his role as second fiddle with aplomb and humor.'
    Asked who wore the pants in the family, he replied, 'I do, of course. I also iron them.;
