Why he might be annoying:

Early in his NASCAR career he was considered a wreckless driver and was blamed for accidents that seriously injured Neil Bonnett and Kyle Petty.
    His nickname was 'Swervin Irvan.'
He suffered a career-ending head injury 5 years to the day of an accident that nearly killed him at the very same track.
He asked out of his contract with Morgan-McClure Motorsports to take over as the driver for the team that Davey Allison was driving for when he died.
He tested a race car while he was recovering from a head injury while wearing an eye patch.
Dale Earnhardt sponsored him in his first NASCAR race.

Why he might not be annoying:

He came back to race again 14 months after doctors gave him a 10% chance to live through the night after a serious accident in Brooklyn, Michigan in 1994.
He publicly apologized and accepted the blame for causing the accident that left Kyle Petty with a broken leg.
After winning his first race driving for the team that Davey Allison drove for when he was killed, Irvan opened his driving uniform to show a Davey Allison t-shirt in victory lane.
He became popular among the fans because of his remarkable comeback to racing.
He was a stand-out tennis player in high school.
He currently works to raise awareness for children to wear helmets while riding bicycles.
Before getting into NASCAR he installed seats at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
