Vocalist

The Resume

    (December 10, 1951- )
    Born in Sabinal, Texas
    Birth name is Juan Rodriguez
Recorded singles 'Ridin' My Thumb to Mexico,' 'You Always Come Back to Hurting Me,' 'Desperado,' 'Down on the Rio Grande' and 'Foolin'
Albums include 'All I Ever Meant to Do Was Sing,' 'Songs About Ladies and Love,' 'Gypsy,' 'Just Get Up and Close the Door,' 'Desperado,' and 'Rodriguez was Here'

Why he might be annoying:

    He married three times.
He was briefly hailed as the 'Latino Elvis.'
His career waned in the early 80s, as the public outgrew its 'outlaw country craze.'
He was arrested for underage alcohol possession as a teen, and was later arrested for public drunkenness as an adult.
He was allegedly 'discovered' after he was arrested for goat rustling for a friend's BBQ, although it was most likely just for unpaid fines.
He was promiscuous, often cutting his concerts short if he spotted a pretty blonde in the audience he wanted to bang.
He abused cocaine, spending close to a quarter million on the drug (while admitting that he got even more of it for free).
It took him over twenty years, and five visits to a rehab center, to kick his addiction.
He was arrested and charged with murder for shooting one of his 'drinking buddies' dead after he mistook him for a burglar in his mother's home (1998).
He admitted in an interview that his murder trial had scared him into 'cutting back' on his drinking, but refused to say that he would actually quit.

Why he might not be annoying:

He lost his father and brother within months of each other in 1972.
He was the first, and remains one of the only, Latinos to make any major traction in American country music. He is also one of the few country singers to blend Latin rhythms/Spanish verses into his songs.
He was acquitted on grounds of self-defense when it was revealed that the man he shot was on probation for four burglaries and had repeatedly threatened Rodriguez (1999).
He evaded the tragic fate of the 'troubled music star' and got his life back on track.
He became a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, which he credits with helping him to manage his anxiety in the stead of alcohol and cocaine.
He had a string of songs which rose to the top of the country music charts between 1973-1975.
He was nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year by the CMA Awards (1973).
His debut album rose to No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart (1973).
He received the Institute of Hispanic Culture Pioneer Award (2010).
He performed at President Bush's Inaugural Ball in 1989.
He was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame (2007).
