Began design for the Uzi submachine gun in 1948 while working as weapons specialist for Israel Military Industries
Weapon officially adopted by the Israel Defense Force in 1951
Died of cancer at age 78

Why he might be annoying:

He was arrested on a weapons charge by British forces in 1943. He spent over two years in prison.
He didn't want the gun he designed named after him, but it happened anyway.
He waived royalties for his invention because he felt as a military man he was doing his duty - helping his country's security.
His weapon has been used by criminals and seen in countless testosterone-laced action movies (Chuck Norris had one for each hand in 'Invasion U.S.A.').

Why he might not be annoying:

His family fled Nazi Germany, moving to England before settling in Israel (1936).
His gun design was revolutionary - with easy assembly, limited recoil, easy reloading and safety features against accidental misfiring.
He received the inaugural Israel Security Award for his work on the Uzi (1958).
His daughter had a brain disorder and he moved to Philadelphia in 1976 so she could be treated (she died in 1984).
He remained in the U.S. as a weapons designer, died in 2002 and was buried in Israel.
