The Resume

    (September 15, 1977- )
    Born in Enugu, Nigeria
    Novelist and poet
Wrote the novels 'Purple Hibiscus' (2003), 'Half of a Yellow Sun' (2006), and 'Americanah' (2013)
Other works include 'The Thing Around Your Neck' (2009) and 'We Should All Be Feminists' (2014)

Why she might be annoying:

She admitted to regularly clashing with her teachers as a young student.
She dropped out of medical school to pursue writing.
She has been known to snap at interviewers if she takes issue with their questions.
For instance, when she was asked during a French Q&A session if Nigeria has bookstores, she responded 'I think it reflects poorly on the French people that you would ask me that question ... I mean surely - its 2018' (but then to be fair that one WAS insulting and the audience applauded her answer).
When she interviewed Hillary Clinton she drew angry responses for asking: 'In your Twitter account, the first word that describes you is wife. And then I think it's mom, and then it's grandmother. And when I saw that I have to confess that I felt just a little bit upset [because] I went and I looked at your husband's Twitter account, and the first word was not husband.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She is the fifth of six children.
    She earned two Masters degrees.
Her mother was the University of Nigeria’s first female registrar.
She cites Chinua Achebe as a major influence.
She was shortlisted for the Caine Prize for her short story 'You in America' (2002).
She won the O. Henry Award for her short story 'The American Embassy' (2003).
She is of Igbo heritage - an oppressed minority that has faced ethnic cleansing in Nigeria- and has drawn on that experience for her fiction.
Beyonce is a huge fan of her work and used an excerpt of the 'We Should All Be Feminists' speech for her 2013 'Flawless' music video.
She remained cool-headed about the Beyoncé connection, saying in one interview: '[What] I hated was that I read everywhere - now people finally know her, thanks to Beyoncé, or: she must be very grateful. I found that disappointing. I thought: I am a writer and I have been for some time and now apparently [what was] expected of me was Thanks to Beyoncé, my life will never be the same again. That's why I didn't speak about it much.'
