Hosted by Ed McMahon (1983-1995) and Arsenio Hall (2002-2004)
Premise: Contestants compete against each other to be judged by five judges in the following categories: Male Vocalist, Female Vocalist, Junior Vocalist, Vocal Group, Spokesmodel, and Comedian

Why Star Search might be annoying:

The lowest rating by a judge was excluded.
Judges were removed from the championship show and were replaced by studio voting.
It was brought back by CBS as an answer to American Idol
The new version featured celebrity judges.
The new version was aired on GSN when junky reality shows made up most of its schedule.
Most of its winners never really went on to do anything.

Why Star Search might not be annoying:

It gave Ed McMahon a chance to assume another identity besides Johnny Carson's sidekick.
Aaliyah, Drew Carey, and Brad Garrett were contestants.
No record contracts were ever given out, saving us from the likes of Clay Aiken-type contestants.
There was never a William Hung-like contestant.
