The Resume

    (October 7, 1960-March 20, 1964)
    Aired on CBS
    Martin Milner as Tod Stiles
George Maharis as Buz Murdock (1960-63)
Glenn Corbett as Lincoln Case (1963-64)
Premise: Adventures of two young men travelling around the United States in a Corvette convertible

Why Route 66 might be annoying:

Despite the title, very few episodes were set along the actual Route 66.
Producer Herbert Leonard had wanted to call the show ‘The Searchers,’ but there were concerns that it would be confused with the John Ford Western of the same name.
The producers commissioned Nelson Riddle to compose a theme song so they would not have to pay for Bobby Troup’s ‘(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66.’
Jack Kerouac thought it ripped off ‘On the Road’ and threatened to sue.
After Maharis left the series, his character was given the Chuck Cunningham treatment and was never mentioned again.
An attempted revival/sequel, starring James Wilder as Buz Murdock’s illegitimate son, lasted only four episodes (1993).

Why Route 66 might not be annoying:

Every episode was shot on location.
Riddle’s theme song was popular enough to become a Top 40 hit.
Ethel Waters was nominated for an Emmy for the episode ‘Goodnight, Sweet Blues’ (1962), making her the first black performer, male or female, nominated for an Emmy for a dramatic performance.
Lincoln Case was a Vietnam veteran at a time when most series studiously ignored that there was a war going on in Southeast Asia.
Three of its scriptwriters -- Sterling Silliphant<37885>, Alvin Sargent, and <31136>Frank Pierson -- would go on to win Oscars.
    Their Corvette looked cool.
