Beauty Contestant

The Resume

    (December 26, 1949- )
    Born in Iowa County, Iowa
    Miss Illinois (1968)
    Miss America (1969)
    Became a physical education teacher

Why she might be annoying:

She was a tomboy growing up.
She was cut from the junior high cheerleading squad.
Illinois pageant officials considered her a longshot to win Miss America: 'They said I had three strikes against me. I was too young, too blonde*, and too athletic. Miss America isn't supposed to sweat.' (*If this seems an odd 'strike,' it should be noted that a blonde contestant had not won since 1957.)
She is the only Miss America contestant to perform a routine on trampoline for the talent portion of the pageant.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was a lifeguard and swimming instructor in Belvedere, Illinois.
The year before she competed for Miss Illinois, she attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she was a member of the men's gymnastic trampoline team and became the first woman at the school to win a varsity letter in sports.
She toured Vietnam with the USO as Miss America.
She served on the President's Council on Physical Fitness for eight years under Presidents Nixon and Ford.
