The Resume

    (August 2, 1983- )
    Born in Nuneaton, United Kingdom
    Defender
Played for the English Women's National Football team
Member of the squad at UEFA Women's Euro (2009)
Played in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup
Played in UEFA Women's Euro 2013
Played at the top level for Arsenal (2008-2009), Leeds Carnegie (2009-2010), Birmingham City (2010-2013), Chelsea (2014), and Notts County
Scored a goal against her own team while trying to prevent Japan from taking an open shot, resulting in a 2-1 defeat, during the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup (2 Jul. 2015)

Why she might be annoying:

    Damned goal line tech...
She was compared to Manuela Arbelaez.
When asked for a comment on her 'own goal' experience, she said 'I'd prefer no one know my name.'
She shares a name with a Huffington Post reporter and columnist.
This resulted in confusion on social media when condolences started pouring into the wrong Twitter account.
Her botched clearance in the 92nd minute of play cost her team the chance to play in the Edmonton, Canada Final.
Arguments surfaced claiming that if she were a man she would have been treated harshly by both the team and her country as a whole, rather than consoled and sympathized with.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her teammates were very supportive of her.
    She inspired the hashtag, #proudofbassett.
Nonetheless, she was still on the receiving end of many misogynistic and abusive tweets.
Even in the wrong direction, that was one hell of a shot!
She became England's own, if less tragic, Andres Escobar.
She played a crucial role in England's victory over both France and Germany's teams.
She sustained a black eye after being elbowed in the face, without any consequence.
She was one of the first 17 female players to be given central contracts by The Football Association (2009).
In all fairness, Michelle Tanner made the same mistake on an episode of Full House (if you can call that good company...)
She was deeply moved by the outpouring of support, saying 'I can't thank enough people for taking the time to message me and reach out... It means a lot.'
