    The prospector who discovered the vein of gold in the region sold the discoverer's rights for just a few pounds, missing out on a greater amount of wealth.
    The Anglo-Boer war started from disputes over who controlled the city.
    It has a reputation for being one of the most violent and dangerous cities in the world.
    The city is so extensive that some estimate a walk from the southern suburbs to the city center would take three days.
    Many of the residents live in sprawling, overcrowded townships and shanty towns.
    Despite its size, it lacks an extensive public transportation system.
    1000 people, mostly students, died in violent clashes with the police in Soweto (1976).
    Many businesses and industries have relocated from the city center to the suburbs, leaving many downtown buildings abandoned.

    Forty percent of the world's gold was discovered in the mines near the city.
    It is the financial, commercial, and economic hub of Africa, producing over 9% of the continent's GDP.
    It is home to many world-class hospitals, universities, restaurants, and stores.
    It is one of the greenest cities in the world, with over 6 million trees and hundreds of parks and golf courses.
    Many immigrants from all over Africa move here for a better life.
    Notable residents have included Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, F.W. de Klerk, Dave Matthews, Charlize Theron, Mark Mathabane, Harry Oppenheimer, Gary Player, Brenda Fassie, and Helen Suzman.
    One of the oldest human skeletons was found in a cave near the city, dated at 3.5 million-years-old.
    It was selected to host the Soccer World Cup in 2010.
