Why he might be annoying:

    He came from a nice middle class family, but was thrown out of the US Air Force due to heroin abuse, leading his descent into drug addiction, drug dealing, pimping, and prison.
    He wrote his first two novels in prison.
    His career lasted only four years.
    His murder remains unsolved.
    His career as a writer lasted only four years.
    The two movies based on his books have both flopped.

Why he might not be annoying:

    After his death, he was smeared when police casually dismissed his death as a drug deal gone bad despite the complete lack of evidence.
    He proved you could turn your life around.
    He could write a novel in a month and wrote 16 in four years.
    Several rappers have referred to him in their songs and cite him as a positive influence.
    He neither glorified nor condemned the characters in his books, he just portrayed them as they were.
