The Resume

    (January 1, 1933-January 1, 2022)
Born in Washington, District of Columbia
    Birth name was Maxwell Banks
Best known for portraying Goldie in ‘The Mack’ (1973)
Also appeared in the films ‘Psych-Out’ (1968), ‘Up Tight!’ (1968), ‘Getting Straight’ (1970), ‘Thomasine and Bushrod’ (1974), and ‘Def Jam’s How to Be a Player’ (1997)

Why he might be annoying:

He started as a stand-up comic until Richard Pryor (his future friend and co-star in ‘The Mack’) told him, ‘I don’t know what you do, but it ain’t comedy.’
He wrote ‘Cleopatra Jones’ for his then-girlfriend, actress Vonetta McGee, but Tamara Dobson was cast in the title role instead.
After ‘Thomasine and Bushrod,’ he took an extended sabbatical from film, killing his career momentum.
He was considered for the role of Marcellus Wallace in ‘Pulp Fiction,’ but Ving Rhames got the part.

Why he might not be annoying:

He acted in Joseph Papp’s Shakespeare-in-the-Park productions.
His mother was murdered in a robbery shortly before production of ‘The Mack,’ and he noted, ‘If you really look at it, there was a sadness about me throughout the whole film because that’s where I was as a human being and I couldn’t hide it.’
He not only starred in ‘Thomasine and Bushrod,’ he also produced, wrote the script, supervised the editing, and helped design the costumes.
His sculptures have been exhibited at Los Angeles’ prestigious Pacific Design Center.
He was a major influence on hip-hop style, with rappers like Snoop Dogg basing much of their image on his performance as Goldie.
The white fur coat he wore to the player’s ball in ‘The Mack’ is part of the collection at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African-American History & Culture.
