    He was left off the A's 1988 playoff roster, which in turn cost him a chance to earn a World Series ring.
    He played on five different teams during his career, including three separate stints with the A's.
    He struggled with consistency issues throughout his career.
    He divorced his wife, after close to 20 years and four children together.
    He was designated for assignment by the Red Sox, which denied him the opportunity to finish his career in his home state.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was considered a solid relief pitcher by baseball pundits.
    He was a member of the inaugural Marlins roster (1993).
    He worked in the construction business, alongside his brothers after his playing career ended.
    He was a fan favorite during his tenure with the Red Sox, primarily in part to his upbringing in the Boston area.
    He was diagnosed with liver and colon cancer, and was at peace with his life at the time of his death.
