    It’s name sounds like 60’s comedian Jack Carter.
    It is very crowded and its water and air are heavily polluted.
    It was built on low-lying plains, and as result, it suffers from frequent floods.
    Travel warnings are frequently issued for Jakarta.
    Riots killed more than a thousand people (1998).
    It was the site of three terrorist bombings by Muslim extremists: Marriot Hotel (2003), Australian Embassy (2004), and the JW Marriott, Ritz Carlton Hotel (2009).
    Traffic is extremely congested, among the worst in the world.
    900 motorcycles and 260 cars are added to the roads everyday.
    Public transport is very inefficient.
    Rubbish is either burnt or thrown into rivers and canals, causing massive pollution.
    Unemployment is a problem, causing residents on Jakarta’s outskirts dig through rubbish landfill sites for things like food and clothes.
    Its residents speak over 200 hundred different languages.
    It was once home to Suharto.

    Like New York is called ‘The Big Apple,’ Jakarta is called ‘The Big Durian (a fruit)’.
    A major school in Jakarta is named for Mahatma Gandhi: The Gandhi Memorial International.
    It’s home to the Indonesian Stock Exchange, The Bank of Indonesia and there are many museums and shopping centers.
    Years of corruption have devastated the city's economy, and as result, many residents have become very poor.
    It’s original colonizers, the Dutch, built a canal system like in Amsterdam to stop flooding.
    Dutch engineers have returned to help stop the current flooding situation.
    Despite it's current situation, it still attracts many tourists.
    Barack Obama went to school in Jakarta from age six to ten.
