The Resume

First known extrasolar planet to orbit habitable zone of a Sun-like star (confirmed by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope)
    Discovery announced December 5, 2011
2.4 times size of Earth and 600 light years away
Orbits around G-type star Kepler 22 - distance from Kepler-22b to host star is about 15% less than distance from Earth to the Sun
Light output of Kepler-22b's star is about 25% less than that of the Sun
With absence of atmosphere, equilibrium temperature would be around -11°C - if greenhouse effect caused by atmosphere is Earthlike, this corresponds to approximate 22°C (72°F) average surface temperature
Orbital revolution around its star takes 289.9 days
Super-telescope, star and planet all named Kepler after the research scientist Johannes Kepler

Why Kepler-22b might be annoying:

Discovered in 2009, NASA waited two years to tell the world of its existence.
This possible super-Earth being 600 light years away translates to it being 3,527,175,223,910,164.5 miles away.
That's 3 quadrillion, 525 trillion, 175 billion, 223 million, 910 thousand, 164 and a ½ miles ONE WAY! (you can do the math for round trip)
The planet could have continents and oceans just like the Earth, but scientists don't have technical capability of sending a probe to find out for sure.

Why Kepler-22b might not be annoying:

Finding a planet that is the most similar to our own is pretty exciting.
The discovery had the SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) people all hopped up.
Scientists believe the planet may not only be habitable, but possibly inhabited now.
Kepler program scientist Dr. Douglas Hudgins stated from NASA's Washington, D.C. headquarters, 'This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin.'
If per chance any Kepler-22b inhabitants read this, it would be great if you could share your most and least annoying lists.
