    He recorded music under three different names before settling on Dobie Gray.
    He remade 'Drift Away' with rock-rapper Uncle Kracker.
    He did voiceover commercial work for the likes of Slimfast and Clorox (amongst others).

    His music combined elements of r&b, soul, country and gospel.
    He acted in several stage productions, including a two year run in the musical 'Hair.'
    He claims to have played the first desegregated concert in Apartheid-era South Africa.
    'Drift Away' was a top-5 hit for him in 1973; the cover with Uncle Kracker became a top-10 hit thirty years later (2003).
