She was typecast as a maid, which was her actual occupation (until 1932).
She was extremely obese.
Her father was a Baptist minister.
She married four times, divorced three times and widowed once.
Three of those marriages lasted less than a year.

She never endorsed Jesse Jackson.
She is the 1st African-American to win an Oscar (no other African American won the award for another 25 years).
She was forced to read an acceptance speech that was ghostwritten by the studio.
She was criticized by African Americans for taking many roles as a maid, so she said: 'I'd rather play a maid than be one.'
She was the first African American to star in a TV series (Beulah).
