The Resume

    (September 27, 1942-October 23, 2014)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
Birth name was Bernard William Jewry
    Originally performed as Shane Fenton
Shane Fenton & the Fentones recorded the singles 'I'm a Moody Guy' (1961) and 'Cindy's Birthday' (1962)
As Alvin Stardust, recorded the singles 'Jealous Mind' (1974), 'Red Dress' (1974), 'You, You, You' (1974), 'Pretend' (1981), 'I Won't Run Away' (1984) and 'I Feel Like Buddy Holly' (1984)

Why he might be annoying:

He was in a cycle gang as a teen.
He replaced the original Shane Fenton (who had died) when the Fentones were asked to appear on the BBC' radio program 'Teenagers' Turn.'
He wasn't the original Alvin Stardust either: songwriter/producer Peter Shelley had recorded 'My Coo Ca Choo' under the Stardust name (1973). When the single became an unexpected hit, Shelley hired Jewry/Fenton to perform as Alvin Stardust.
His trademark look of huge sideburns and black gloves came about by accident: he needed to dye his hair black for an appearance on 'Top of the Pops,' but the dye stained his cheeks and hands so he quickly donned stick-on sideburns and gloves to cover up.
He was married three times, divorced twice.
He became a born again Christian after meeting two Baptist missionaries on a train.

Why he might not be annoying:

The mother of the original Shane Fenton approved of him taking her son's place.
He went from being roadie for the Fentones to their lead singer.
He starred in a memorable road safety campaign in which he told would-be jaywalkers, 'You must be out of your tiny minds.'
Keith Richards called him 'the godfather of British rock 'n' roll.'
After the hits dried up, he launched a successful career in musical theater in London's West End.
He died of prostate cancer less than two weeks before the scheduled release of his first album of new material in 30 years.
