The Resume

    (January 7, 1930-March 15, 2013)
    Born in Maryville, Tennessee
Member of Ernest Tubb's backing band, the Texas Troubadors (1962-65)
Recorded the Top 5 country singles 'There Goes My Everything' (1966), 'All the Time' (1967), 'What Locks the Door' (1967), 'You Are My Treasure' (1968), 'Love Takes Care of Me' (1968), 'Until My Dreams Come True' (1969), 'Statue of a Fool' (1969), 'Back in the Arms of Love' (1969) and 'Wish I Didn't Miss You' (with Jeannie Seeley, 1970)
Member of the Grand Ole Opry (1967-2011)

Why he might be annoying:

He was nicknamed 'the Jolly Green Giant.'
One reason Tubb hired him was that he had learned about diesel motors during a stint in the army and thus could repair the tour bus.
Tubb liked to introduce him as 'our big-eared singing drummer.'
He introduced Kenny Chesney as 'Larry Chesney' during Chesney's Grand Ole Opry debut.

Why he might not be annoying:

His 'There Goes My Everything' album was #1 on the country chart for a full year.
He dominated the first Country Music Association (CMA) Awards, winning Album of the Year, Single of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.
He was the first country singer to perform at the Macy's Thanksgiving parade (1967).
His singing style, a near-operatic tenor, was compared to Roy Orbison.
