U.S. Senator

The Resume

    (August 26, 1872-July 14, 1937)
    Born in Lonoke, Arkansas
    Middle name is Taylor
United States Senator from Arkansas (March 10, 1913–July 14, 1937)
    Governor of Arkansas (January 16, 1913–March 8, 1913)
    Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Arkansas's 6th district (March 4, 1903 – January 14, 1913)
    Vice Presidential Nominee (1928)
    Senate Majority Leader (March 4, 1933–July 14, 1937)
    Democrat

Why he might be annoying:

    His presidential ambitions went unrealized.
By all accounts, he kissed both Woodrow Wilson's and FDR's asses to the point of alienating others.
He repeatedly almost came to blows with his Senate colleagues.
He questioned Senator Robert La Follette's patriotism on the Senate floor when he voted against US entry into World War I (the two had to be restrained on the Senate floor).
When a guard questioned his credentials at the entrance to the 1920 Democratic National Convention, his response was to punch the guard in the face.
He was chosen to be Al Smith's running mate on the premise that he could deliver the Southern vote, but they lost in a landslide to Republicans Herbert Clark Hoover and Charles Curtis.
He was pushing a bill to pack the Supreme Court before he died (the issue was set to split the Democrat party if it had gone forward).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was admitted to the bar in 1895 and practiced law in his hometown.
He was known for being a skilled orator.
He was a champion of religious tolerance.
He attacked the Ku Klux Klan from the Senate floor.
He helped President Wilson push through child labor reform into law.
He pushed the Emergency Banking Act through the Senate in 1933.
He pushed President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation through the Senate.
He became the first Arkansan ever nominated for a national office (June 29, 1928).
Although argument-prone, he actually was good friends with many of his Senate colleagues across the aisle.
